What is Romance?

We’ve just finished with Valentines and spring, also known as wedding season, is right around the corner. As a romance writer I wonder what other people consider romantic. I don’t believe romance is one size fits all. Some couples thrive by sharing their love of movies or antique shopping, others need the exhilaration of zip-lining and skydiving, but whether you share the love of cooking or death-defying acts, romance is about shared moments. It is also about putting another person’s dreams, goals, and desires ahead of your own.

When I read or watch romantic stories, I love it when the characters bring out the best in each other. Romance as a genre is about the relationship of two people and how they make each other’s lives better. It’s all about falling in love and how that changes their lives and makes them stronger, braver, or better. I believe that in real life, romance should be empowering. Our romantic partner should balance us, support us and be our safe haven.
