Why do we both desire and fear change? Why do we resist change even when we are unhappy with our situation? Is it in our DNA? Is this a safety mechanism left over from our cave-dwelling days?
In my recent blog post I discuss reading as a writer. Do you find it more difficult to lose yourself in a book now that you know how stories are created? Do you lose some of your joy of reading? Are you like the magician who cannot see the wonder of the illusion because he is looking for how the trick is done. Sometimes I find the mechanics leaping out at me and I can’t turn off the knowledge. It’s one reason I enjoy listening to audiobooks. With audiobooks I can be entertained without seeing how everything is put together.
This really hit me. For years and sometimes still I worry more about what others think of me rather than being true to myself. I believe the strongest, most courageous people are those who can say this is me…I am still trying.
