Spring and Romance

“In the spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love” is a line from Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem “Locksley Hall”.

Spring weddings and new romance are as abundant as spring flowers and the birth of babies after a long cold winter.

What is it about spring that makes us think of love and romance? Is it simply that it is mating season for all animals or is there more to it?

Spring is a time of warmer temperatures and longer days. The sun shine brings dopamine which improves energy and mood. After a long, cold, often dark winter, people are ready to celebrate and enjoy the company of others.

Spring romance might be nothing more than loneliness combined with hormones, but those of who are in love with love believe it is something more.

So what do you think? Why do we associate spring with love?

  1. I seem to consider any time of year to be ripe for love. But I expect the warmer temperatures and Nature’s insistence we procreate has something to do with more people falling in love in the spring.
At least that’s my old woman view of things. Good post, my friend.
